Test Drive

TEST DRIVE 001

-TDM threads can be considered game canon if players involved agree & if it suits any roles you may decide to choose for the current plot.
-Any reserving player that does not submit an app by Saturday morning will be subject to challenging applicants.
-Participation in the Test Drive is worth a flat 10 points per month rather than per thread, and you must have a minimum of 5 comments in that month to qualify for it.
-This TDM is good for the duration of the Mist setting. A new TDM will go up before the next setting.

The NETWORK for this setting is a voice-only walkie talkie system that can be used to communicate between all locations. The default channel will be open to all walkie talkies, but characters can change to an unused channel for private conversation.
of note: There seems to be something strange about these walkie talkies, in that there is no static. The quality is disturbingly crystal clear, like the person you're speaking to is right next to you instead of miles away.

CONTENT WARNING: Some prompts contain gore, character death, and substance abuse.

Reserves will open on Saturday, September 8 until Saturday, September 15
Applications will open Saturday, September 15 until Saturday, September 22

General Prompts

The lights above you are a blindingly, pristine white. The walls around you curve up into the ceiling like the inside of an MRI machine. Your hands, feet, and midsection are strapped to a clinical table, and minutes seem to tick by, with no clear course for escape presenting itself to you.

The curved white space above you flickers with color, and a perfect square like a television screen expands before your eyes. It pans over what appears to be a town, something small and simply populated.

“Hello, and welcome to your first setting,” a neutrally cadenced feminine sounding voice begins, riding the line between human and machine. As she speaks, captions of the text type themselves in neat and perfect Arial font. “The location is loosely based off Bridgton, Maine, United States of America, Earth. The year is 2007. You have been selected to participate. Obedience ensures an enjoyable and immersive experience for our audience. If you have been granted a role, instructions will follow. Do not talk about the role. Do not attempt disobedience. If you have not been granted a role, your objective for this round is simple: survive.”

After that, the shackles may release promptly and allow your character to roam free. Or perhaps not — perhaps they've been given a role to play, and if so, further instructions will play out upon the screen. Once suitably briefed, characters will be released to their own devices. Beware the mist.

CHECK OUT THE CURRENT SETTING PAGE FOR DETAILS ABOUT THE LOCATION.

learn from the mistakes of others

A pair of unperturbed mall inhabitants decide to chance the mist. They're the first of a handful to trickle out the front doors, and they seem to get by just fine. About a minute ticks by, and they disappear completely into the dense fog that presses in from every direction. It's so anticlimactic that for a moment it almost seems stupid to feel uncomfortable by the sight of it.

Until precisely one half of a body is hurled abruptly and with great force from an indeterminate point in the obscurity. It's not a top half or a bottom half; no, it's a cleanly sliced left half, head to toe as though a neat line were cut down the middle. It slams into the transparent glass doors and crumples before them, still and obviously unmoving, slowly leaking.

After a few seconds, a dark tendril of something reaches out, curls around the jutting left ankle, and drags it with painstaking slowness back into the fog.

At least the rest of them probably made it, right?

Right?

Hopefully you weren't one of the others to follow their lead. If you were, that dark shape seems to be closing in awfully quick.

eff this, let's bounce

A pair of car keys can be found discarded or perhaps dropped in their owners' haste. Braving the mist when it's at its lightest and pressing the key fob will cause a car to beep politely, flashing lights to indicate its location in the fog. Take anyone willing to go with you and pile in. Try to get the hell out of dodge!

An excellent idea....

Within five miles of the car's journey the battery will die and the engine will stall. Consider yourselves effectively stranded and with no one but yourselves to blame. Perhaps help will come if you wait long enough? Hours, surely no more than a few days... Maybe you should consider braving the fog to get back? Five miles can feel like a hundred in conditions like these.

Either way, it seems like you're trapped in the car for about as long as R. Kelly got trapped in the closet during that one unfortunate CD.

radio chatter

Characters in the library and the church will be able to communicate via walkie talkie radio chatter immediately! Characters in the mall will not have this ability until later in the month, so any network style threads with a mall character will take place during Week Two of the October plot or later, after most people have already been fully introduced to the setting and given time to adapt.

Roles

Employee of the Month (Multiple)

Some characters will be printed wearing a designated kiosk uniform, their name sloppily stickered in slightly crooked letters onto a Dippin' Dots badge, or whatever store they may happen to be assigned to. The cool voice that introduces them to the mist will carry on to tell them that they'll be playing employee # _____ in this month's immersive experience. Their motivations and objectives are simple: go to work.

Except the role seems to be bugged, because they can never not go to work. If they leave the five or six foot radius of their designated post they'll begin to experience consequences, which worsen in severity based on distance and duration. The role doesn't end at mall closing, it doesn't end on Saturdays, it simply doesn't end. Hopefully next month's code push will have a bug fix; we apologize for the inconvenience.

(If choosing to keep these threads as game canon, the role will wear off within the first in-game week)

Aggravated Assault

Congratulations, participant! You will be playing the role of a CONVICTED FELON having recently been released on parole. Your motivation for this month's immersive experience is frustration. Having undergone hard time, you'll find that we have increased your aggression and temper characteristics, and lowered your inhibitions. Your objective is to find and begin an altercation with Snuff the Rooster, who will be playing the role of the person who turned you in, NARK. Your altercation must take place in a public space with witnesses, and may not stop until Snuff the Rooster is unconscious, evicted from the mall, or someone intervenes.

Thank you for your participation!

Consequences for not completing the objective in this role can be moderate to severe.

Snuff the Rooster

Congratulations, participant! You will be playing the role of NARK. Formerly a close friend and ally of CONVICTED FELON from Aggravated Assault, you were quick to roll on them during police questioning in exchange for your freedom. Your motivation is to turn over a new leaf, and get your shit together. Your objective is to survive the altercation.

Thank you for your participation!

The Lovers (Duo Role)

Congratulations, participant! You will be playing one half of a partnership role! Please seek out (character 2). Your motivation this round is love, and the need to protect your partner from threats both inside and outside of the mall. Your objectives is to greet your lover with a kiss and place them above all others. Do not act like strangers.
Consequences for not completing the objective in this role or failing to present a convincing couple can be mild to moderate.

Pathological

Congratulations, participant! You will be playing a background character in our current setting. Your motivation is to tell lies; at least one third of what you say must be unarguably untrue. Your objective is to keep these lies from being discovered as false.
Consequences for not complying with this role can vary from mild to severe, with the compulsion to tell larger and larger lies growing as time goes on.

Scared Speechless

Congratulations, participant! You will be playing a background character in our current setting. You may choose one person, stranger or otherwise. This is the only person you may communicate with, either verbally or through writing.
Consequences for not complying with this role are severe.

Glitches

potency error

Someone seems to have miscalculated the relative strength of intoxicants; all inhibition-altering substances seem to have been cranked up to eleven. One shot has the strength of three, though the taste seems to stay exactly the same. One or two drinks will quickly creep up on you. One of the joints found discarded in the bathroom trashcans will easily green you out. God forbid you've got anything stronger.

greatest movie of all time

Settling in to the relatively nice theater found at the far end of the mall is a decent way to make the time go by. The projectors are automated, and there are six different theaters that show flicks at scheduled times.

Except that every single one of them is showing Spider-Man 3. Every single one, every single showing, no matter what is advertised, becomes Spider-Man 3. That's how you know this is a horror game. Hope you didn't wander in by mistake because the doors will shut behind you and leave you to watch the entire showing. Please keep your feet off of the seats.

please replace toner cartridge

It seems there was an error in printing someone this first time around; everything came through but the visuals somehow. Your character is flesh and blood, fully formed, wearing tangible clothes even, but are completely invisible. Donning additional clothing causes it to clip out and then promptly disappear. Taking clothes off will cause them to reappear. Hopefully this gets fixed in the next lite patch.

(If choosing to keep these threads as game canon, the glitch will wear off within the first in-game week)

Kacchan...

[Izuku is worrying his bottom lip, gaze on his friend. He didn't want to coddle him--the last thing Kacchan ever wanted was to be coddled--but Izuku was worried. All of the bravado was gone, which only made him think whatever Kacchan had seen out there was not good. Worse than he already thought it to be, with what it had done with those bodies.]

[He treads carefully.] I'm not going to pester you for information if you don't want to talk about it, but it would be helpful for my notes. Information is the only thing I'm able to work with right now, since I can't leave. Otherwise, you can just give me something else to work on while I'm here, if anything has caught your interest.

[ DON'T YOU FUCKEN DARE! DON'T YOU DARE PITY HIM!

Red eyes sharpen, jaw clenched in anger. He's about to explode on him when that line hits him head on, bringing him back to the problem at hand. ]

........

[ Clever. It's neither pity or concern but down to business. It's enough to smother the flare of anger from rising to the surface. But now, he's got no outlet for the spike of aggression leaving him in a shitty mood. ]

Shut your fucken mouth and listen up.

There's nothing more important than getting out of this shitty place. So, don't get fucken side-tracked like some amataeur. You can probably stomach rotting in this hellhole but I sure as hell ain't buying their bullshit. There's a way out of here. You can either help me look for it or stay out of my way, Deku.

[ The glares at him, the aggression finding an outlet in his resolve. ]

I'm trying to help you look for it! [His voice raises, arms outstretched.] I'm trying! It's not like I want to be stuck here either, and it's not like I can just walk around and get this information myself!

[Izuku was already frustrated being stuck here and not able to help anyone, but Kacchan letting out his frustration on him struck a nerve.

Ugh.

Breathe, Izuku. Getting upset wasn't going to help anyone. He flexes his fingers as he stares at the ceiling for a moment, collecting himself.]

If you know a way out of here, then please let me know. I'm trying to stay here until we have a solid plan, so I don't handicap myself earlier than I need to. [He brings his gaze back onto the other.] If you have any information, then share it so I can keep track of everything. It'll make it easier to go through the stuff we discover later.

[It's not like I have anything else to distract me but hair here, was the bitter thought in his head.]

You said you went out into the fog right? What was it like?

[ His fists clench at his sides, shoulders tensing. There's anger there, but it's not directed at Deku but at himself. After hours of reconnaissance he hasn't learned a single thing that could help them escape. All he found were blocks and barricades meant to keep them in. ]

............

[ His fists open and close, the action repeating until his breathing calms. He grounds himself, the execution taking no more than a minute, yet feels like ten. Once he's calmed down, he can think rationally again. His mind snapping to attention ready to dispense facts. ]

[Izuku grits his teeth at Kacchan's initial outburst. Kacchan was bark and bite, but his bark was always much louder--distracting. Izuku couldn't let the anger distract him from the fact that they were both frustrated here. And Kacchan's bark was always loudest when he felt backed into a corner.]

Then they probably don't want us to fight whatever is out there--or they think it's impossible for us to fight it. [Put it close enough so people were fooled into thinking they had a chance, and make an example of those who tried.] Maybe our win condition isn't fighting that thing.

[He keeps his gaze off Kacchan for now, kneeling back over his notes. If he stood for too long, he felt like he would be more likely to argue back again--so instead he takes a more non-threatening pose.] What about the nature of the mist? Is it always thick, or does it fluctuate with the time of day?
noblebeast: (Calm: Spill it)

[personal profile] noblebeast 2018-08-23 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
[ Bakugou watches him return to his notes in silence. A pang of anger twists his stomach at the fact that he doesn't take the bait and fires back. If there's one thing Bakugou's good at it's reacting. It's what makes him a strong fighter. He's got good instincts, a head for tactics and the capability to use his power to their full potential. So long as he has a clear opponent, he can destroy them. But here, he doesn't have that. There's no clear enemy, no one to fight or destroy.

Only the fog.

He's been out in the thick of it more than once, each time trying to figure out a way to circumvent the stipulations that kept them here. And each time the fog rolled-in forcing him to retreat when blood started pouring. ]

You can't fight it. [ He looks up, his stance more stable than before. ] You fight the source. [ A declaration of war. ]

[ He stands more calmly. Confidant in his endeavor. He's ventured into the haze more than once not to understand what he's up against. ]

The density fluctuates. There's times when you can see 10ft out. You can move through when it's like that, but not for long. Soon, the fear and paranoia get to you. [ He hasn't been out there long enough for the hallucinations, yet. ]

It tends to thicken out of nowhere, going from light to moderate so you can only see a few feet ahead. [ A pointed look. ] When it's like that, you bleed from your nose, eyes, gums, ears, fingernails. Once you start bleeding you've only got 2 minutes to get out without incurring any serious blood loss.

[ A long pause, as if he's thinking how to say the next part. ]

There's dense fog too... I haven't encountered it yet. But from what I gathered. That's the same one that killed those guys at the start.

[The pen scribbling furiously as Kacchan speaks is the only sound from Izuku for a while. He's glad to be looking down, because he wasn't sure how good of a job he was doing schooling the horror from his expression.

Bleeding out from just being in the mist? With no observable pattern of when it would wax and wane?

And Kacchan had to deal with all of that alone?

His hand shakes, nearly causing his writing to be illegible in spots. But he forces himself to get every detail down.]

...

[When he's done, the silence lingers without the scratching of pent to paper to fill the air. The only motion from him are the shaking of his shoulders as he takes trembling breaths, eyes downcast.

And then, the moment passes.

Izuku is getting to his feet, notes in hand. He's not exactly meeting Kacchan's eyes, but his face has been set in a more neutral expression--the clenching of his jaw was the only thing to protray his stress.]

So...trying to predict a pattern in the mist is out of the question for now, but you are still able to travel through it for short periods of time if necessary. The denser fog hides whatever it is that is killing people. [A deep, steadying breath through his nose.] For now, we should focus our thoughts on stopping whatever is causing the mist in the first place.

[Stopping the mist...fighting the source...]

But is that something we're capable of doing alone? With the little bit of information that we do have?

[ He regroups himself. The anger replaced determination. ]

No.

[ He's got no delusions of their situation, but he's not about to give up. No matter how bleak the situation, he intends to decimate whatever fool thought it'd be a good idea to kidnap imprison Bakugou Katsuki. ]

Not without our powers. [ He stipulates, mind turning over the information. ] Whatever it is, its got control of the environment. Add in the mind control shit [ the cogs begin to turn ] and it's a recipe for disaster.

[ For them. ]

Tch.

[ He crosses his arms, mouth slanting into a grim line. ]

Divide and conquer.

Its limiting our mobility. The fog. Our powers. The compulsion to stay in these shitty stores. It's enough to keep us from staging an effective offense.
mightyboy: (muttering)

[personal profile] mightyboy 2018-08-26 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think the reason our powers and our abilities to group together have been blocked is because they know this simulation wouldn't be as threatening to us if we had full control over them? [Were they a threat to the very people who put them here with their powers?

An interesting tidbit to keep in mind if they had an opportunity to regain control in the future.]

It does make for a more compelling horror story with all these limiters. Ugh, frustrating... [Izuku is mumbling more to himself, pressing the scribbled notes to his forehead.]

Whoever had set us up in this place knew exactly how to create a panic situation where people would feel desperate and more likely to make rash decisions. A recipe for disaster...Even without the threat of the monster in the mist, we would probably destroy ourselves...would it be better if we behaved in the opposite way of what they wanted us to? To rebel against the simulation by not giving into panic? But that doesn't put into account that we don't know what their true objective for us is...if they're just studying us in general rather than wanting us to succumb to some horror movie tropes, then acting outside of the norm wouldn't be as effective...but it could cause them to be more lax with the simulation because they don't know what our motives are...

[He loses himself in his thoughts, completely forgetting that Kacchan is there. Mumbling out loud does give him more direction, mood improving as he sorts out his ideas.]

[ Bakugou picks up his pack and leaves him to it. He's got better shit to do than wait for the nerd to resurface. He's got his own ideas, his own contingency plans and truth be told he rather work with anyone else but Deku. He was still trying to consolidate the Deku he had come to know with the one from his past. The one he thought was constantly looking down on him, the one who gave him compliments Bakugou was certain were nothing but false pretense.

His mouth thins into a grim line. It was hard reworking your view of someone you'd written off long ago. ]

[Eventually Midoriya does resurface, after a long moment of incomprehensible mumbling as he writes down his thoughts. There were too many variables for the line of thinking he was going down to be of any use to them now in the present, so they are saved for analysis later.

The notes are gathered up and put somewhere safer than the floor, piled in a neat stack on the counter as he approaches Kacchan again. He continues on as if he hadn't spent a good two minutes lost in his own world--too determined to notice any awkward gap in time.]

Did you meet up with any people while you were out? Did anyone else have any ideas on how to work against this place, or any useful tools?

[If the were going to have any chance of a positive outcome, working together was a must.]
noblebeast: (King: The Prince)

[personal profile] noblebeast 2018-08-26 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Tch. Figures he wouldn't notice. He had too many openings for someone in the middle of a battlefield. It might not look like it, but Bakugou knew the situation. The mall was no more a safe haven than the fog outside. Worst, it made you lax. Made you forget you were actually in danger. It was why Bakugou spent little with with anyone he met up. This wasn't play time and he had no intention of losing his focus. ]

Some.

[ Is all he says. He'd given the rest of them the radio channel if they wanted to talk. ]

Rigged some toy car with a camera to send out into the fog. We lost signal.

[ That was the last 'safe' idea he'd tried. He figured out fairly quickly that if he wanted some answers he'd need to risk more than a toy car. ]

Made some bombs while I had some time.

[ Because, you know, that's what normal people do. ]

[personal profile] mightyboy 2018-08-26 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's a hum from Izuku, scratching down that information.] So technology is rendered useless in the mist... [They would have to use some more analog methods.

The mention of bombs has him looking up]

With your quirk? [Ah. He had asked Shinsou about his, but he hadn't asked Kacchan.] Speaking of which, how well is your quirk working here?
noblebeast: (King: The Prince)

[personal profile] noblebeast 2018-08-26 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A look. If you think he's going to reveal his weaknesses, you really don't know him at all. ]

I can make bombs without my quirk.

[ Considering his sweat is nitroglycerin-like, did you really expect him not to research the subject? He's not just brute strength. ]
mightyboy: (getting too old for this shit)

[personal profile] mightyboy 2018-08-26 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[The look only garners a sigh from Izuku. Stubborn till the end...]

I only ask [emphasis] because I haven't been able to use my quirk at all, and Shinsou says his quirk is at reduced potency--so I'm trying to figure out all the resources we have at the moment.
noblebeast: (Hero: Listen Up)

[personal profile] noblebeast 2018-08-27 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ The bitter end. ]

I already told you. I'm making bombs.

[ Put that in your resources.

Sadly, if it were Kaminari or Kirishima, he'd probably tell them in a roundabout way. You and your nerd friends, yeah no. He ain't telling you shit. ]
mightyboy: (get ready)

[personal profile] mightyboy 2018-08-27 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
[It's not the question he was asking, and they both know it--but it was going to be a losing battle and he didn't feel like getting in a fight one of the few people he could trust here, so Izuku concedes for now.]

So it's working in some capacity, I get it. [So he was stuck AND he was the only one who couldn't get their quirk to work at all. Great.]

[Wait, no. He had to stop thinking negatively. Not conducive to planning, Izuku. Back on track.]

Shinsou and I have been trying to think of ways to use the extent of his quirk to gather more information from people less willing to speak without a little help, and you have the offensive. I've talked to other people who are gathering information as well, so I'll let you know if anything of note comes up.
noblebeast: (Calm: Fuck You)

[personal profile] noblebeast 2018-08-27 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't need my quirk to make bombs.

[ He repeats, which is the closests he'll get to talking about it. The the amount of sweat he's been able to collect has only been enough to make three make-shift explosives. The rest are self-made from local ingredients. ]

.....

[ There's a pause there. He didn't expect the body snatcher to have that much use of his quirk. His eyes narrow then, recalling a moment he almost thought he'd felt something... had that bastard been trying to control him?! He'll kill him! ]

A little help? He's getting them to talk?

[ Out of all the students from their world, Aizawa's wannabe hair twin was the one he had the least intel on. He wasn't sure how his quirked worked, and since his battle with Deku, he hadn't come up with a suitable countermeasure if he ever did get caught. It was irritating that Deku had somehow managed to break it, yet he couldn't come up with an adequate countermeasure. ]

Of course, I have the offensive. I wouldn't trust you idiots to keep yourself fed properly let alone in charge of an attack.

[ Yeah, okay. He's still an arrogant ass but by this point, his words don't really have any heat to them and he doesn't really mean to sound half as bad as he does... I mean, he does, but he doesn't mean it... if that makes any sense. Oh, how fun it is to be emotionally constipated. Anyway! ]

I'll keep testing the fog. If I find anything new, I'll let you know.

[ As in, he'll cooperate. But only b/c he needs pawns to gather information as fast as possible. It has nothing to do with actually wanting his classmates to stay safe. Not at all. ]
mightyboy: (at it again)

[personal profile] mightyboy 2018-08-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Izuku's sigh wasn't well hidden at the bomb comment. Why Kacchan thought he was out to use ever little piece of information about against him was beyond Izuku.

Well...no, he knew a little better of the why. But that didn't mean he fully understood it. Years of misunderstanding was hard to fix.

At least Izuku has the courtesy not to comment, ignoring the remark.]

Well, we haven't actually put the extent of Shinso's Brainwash to use yet. It's kind of a trial run to see how much we can get it to work, but I think our brainstorming session went well enough.

[Now it was in Shinso's hands--but he could trust Shinso. He was smart.]

[Izuku does laugh a bit at the "fed" part, looking at the backpack of supplies.]

Well, I couldn't feed myself properly if I wanted to, unless I develop an appetite for hair. So I appreciate the supplies.

[Back to the fog though. Their main concern. He's worried about Kacchan testing it out, after hearing what the effects were. But even if he voiced them, he doubts the other would listen. If anything, it would just spur him on to be more aggressive in his testing just to spite Izuku. So he keeps his worries to himself, giving a nod instead.]

Keep me updated. Try to take people with you if you can. Backup is always good in a unknown situation like this.

Sorry. I'm just trying to make suggestions since I can't help myself. I don't know what's out there, so you have a better handle on the situation than I do.
